Grow your own food

There are some foods that are very easy to grow and will even grow in pots on a balcony or window sill. If you haven’t started a garden already, try starting with some of these:

  • Basil
  • Mint
  • Parsley
  • Coriander
  • Oregano
  • Dandelion
  • Cherry tomatoes (can be grown well in a hanging pot)

If you don’t have a garden already, this is what you will need to get started:

If you are growing in pots:

  • medium size pots
  • potting mix
  • seedlings/seeds

If you are growing in a yard:

  • potting mix or soil/compost in a patch in the garden
  • seedlings/seeds

Most of the plants listed above can be bought at your local nursery or often your supermarket will have seedlings. You will most likely have to order the dandelion seeds online (eg. https://www.theseedcollection.com.au), but they will grow easily and once you have one plant you will never need to buy seeds again – they produce a lot of seeds!

Just fill the pots/garden patch with soil and pop the seedling/seeds in. Water them as needed (once/day in summer and once every few days in winter).

This will give you a basic start. There is a lot more information available about how to develop your capacity to grow your own food. But the main thing is to get started. You don’t have to start by growing enough to feed everyone. Even using the few plants listed above as a starter will give you an idea of how to grow and how lovely it is to have fresh herbs and foods in your daily life.
